Horizon Europe Projects Kick Off Webinar Series on Safe and Sustainable Bio-Based Innovation

The BioPhenom project, together with SuperBark, OLinWASTE, CUBIC, and BioSusTex, successfully launched the webinar series “Advancing Sustainable Bio-Based Systems: From Safe Design to Circular End-of-Life Solutions” with Day 1: From Concept to Compliance: Implementing Safe and Sustainable by Design, held on 19 May 2026.

The session brought together researchers and stakeholders to explore approaches supporting the implementation of Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) in the development of chemicals, materials, and bio-based products.

Participants had the opportunity to hear from experts across Horizon Europe projects, including:

  • Barry Hardy (Edelweiss Connect GmbH), who introduced an evidence-based workflow approach supporting SSbD goals for chemical and materials design.
  • Panagiotis Isigonis (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology – LIST / SuperBark), who shared insights into the application of SSbD to bio-based adhesives and coatings derived from industrial softwood bark.
  • Elena Semenzin (University Ca’ Foscari Venice – UNIVE / BioSusTex), who presented methods and tools supporting Safe and Sustainable by Design in the textile sector.

The webinar encouraged valuable discussions around the integration of safety, sustainability, and circularity principles into material innovation, highlighting the importance of cross-project collaboration in advancing bio-based systems aligned with European sustainability goals.

The webinar series will continue with Day 2: “Circular Pathways for Bio-Based Materials: Sidestreams and End-of-Life Strategies”, taking place on 8 June 2026 (11:00–12:30 CET). The upcoming session will focus on biomass sidestream valorisation, recycling pathways, and end-of-life strategies for bio-based materials.
