First SuperBark Scientific Paper Published: Advancing Bark-Based Barrier Films for Sustainable Packaging

The SuperBark project is proud to announce its first peer-reviewed scientific publication, marking an important milestone in the project’s journey to develop safe, sustainable, and high-performance bio-based materials from softwood bark.

The study explores how softwood bark, an underutilised side stream of the forest industry, can be transformed into advanced cellulose nanofibril (CNF) films with promising barrier properties for sustainable packaging applications. By tailoring the polyphenol content of bark-derived materials, the researchers demonstrate new opportunities to create high-value, bio-based alternatives to conventional fossil-based packaging materials.

The study shows that softwood bark residues can be converted into CNF films with good mechanical strength, UV protection, and oxygen barrier properties, demonstrating a promising way to valorise an abundant forest industry sidestream. Although bark-based CNF does not yet outperform wood-based alternatives, its lower processing energy demand and potential use as a sustainable barrier layer in packaging make it a promising material for reducing food loss and advancing circular bioeconomy solutions.

Launched in 2023, SuperBark is developing bio-based adhesives and coatings derived from industrial softwood bark to improve the sustainability, health, and safety profiles of materials used in sectors such as packaging, furniture, construction, and transportation. The project places a strong emphasis on Safe and Sustainable by Design principles, supporting Europe’s transition towards a circular and competitive bioeconomy.
